Many companies are faced with a dilemma.

On one hand, globalization and intensified competition demand flexibility. Companies must react immediately to dynamic market conditions and continually adapt their processes in order to survive in the face of competition. On the other hand, however, more and more of a company's processes are linked closely with its IT resources, and traditional IT systems are often not ready to handle new challenges. The inevitable result is that the company is actually held back by its IT system and is unable to react as quickly as the market dictates.

Business Process Management (BPM) promises a way out of this impasse. BPM tools automate process mapping in IT and facilitate continuous access to current process data. This has several benefits. First of all, it reduces the cost of process adjustments and makes the company more flexible. Secondly, managers always have access to up-to-date information and are therefore able to react faster. The result is a "real-time company". Although BPM in itself is not a new idea, the currently available technologies represent a new level of maturity. Web service technologies and platforms, in particular, provide new opportunities for automating business processes.
