{"id":125,"date":"2009-11-03T09:14:06","date_gmt":"2009-11-03T09:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pleus.net\/blog\/?p=125"},"modified":"2010-08-12T19:32:03","modified_gmt":"2010-08-12T17:32:03","slug":"cars-software-and-competitiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pleus.net\/blog\/?p=125","title":{"rendered":"Cars, Software and Competitiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is often said that software development should be like building cars.<\/p>\n<p>But cars are very different from modern software systems.<br \/>\nSince its invention more that 100 years ago a car is a very stable concept.<br \/>\nThis works because the purpose for which it is build (driving on a more or less solid ground) is stable as well. <\/p>\n<p>Software on the other hand needs to be much more flexible because the context changes frequently.<br \/>\nSome examples are markets, organizations, products and the internet.<br \/>\nThe concept of software is much more abstract than the concept of a car.<\/p>\n<p>More and more people realize that agility paired with quality is a key success factor.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s why a short concept to market cycle is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Automotive is in fact a bad role model. You can see that every day.<br \/>\nThe market is demanding for efficient cars with a low carbon footprint.<br \/>\nBut the vendors fail to deliver. Why? Because they are too inflexible.<\/p>\n<p>Let us not make the same fault.<br \/>\nIn fact the methods and tools are available to establish a fast concept to market cycle.<br \/>\nSome examples are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrumalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scrum<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoq.com\/articles\/guest-simon-sketchflow\" target=\"_blank\">Silverlight SketchFlow<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ids-scheer.com\/en\/ARIS\/ARIS_Solutions\/Business-Driven_SOA_Management\/140099.html\" target=\"_blank\">Business driven SOA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the companies have the heart to try those new approaches, they might be with rewarded with competitive advantage and flexibility.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is often said that software development should be like building cars.
