{"id":17,"date":"2003-12-04T16:37:16","date_gmt":"2003-12-04T16:37:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pleus.net\/blog\/?p=17"},"modified":"2010-08-13T00:13:12","modified_gmt":"2010-08-12T22:13:12","slug":"who-is-defining-the-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pleus.net\/blog\/?p=17","title":{"rendered":"Who Is Defining The Standards ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nIn the past the picture was clear.<br \/>\nOn one hand there were &#8220;open&#8221; standards like the J2SE\/J2EE maintained via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jcp.org\">Java Community Process(JCP)<\/a> and hosted by Sun Microsystems.<br \/>\nOther vendors participated and helped the standards evolve.<br \/>\nOn the other hand were de facto standards, mainly set by Microsoft, for instance MFC or the .NET technology stack.<\/p>\n<p>Currently the picture is changing.<br \/>\nIn my perception the pace in the Java world has become slower. How long did it take to finish for instance the EJB2.1 specification ?<br \/>\nIn the meantime Microsoft inceased their effort to elaborate their technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Beside that new boards like <a href=\"http:\/\/ws-i.org\">WS-I<\/a> to were founded to help establish the WS-* standards. If you have a look at the specifications you will notice that the key players are IBM, Microsoft and BEA.<br \/>\nIn addition to that BEA and IBM work closely together to write <a href=\"http:\/\/dev2dev.bea.com\/technologies\/commonj\/index.jsp\">Java Joint Specifications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Quote from the announcement:<br \/>\n&#8220;In response to requests from customers and joint Independent Software Vendor (ISV) partners, BEA and IBM are collaborating on specifications for programming models and APIs for Java(tm) 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application servers that provide programmers with simpler and more powerful ways of building portable server applications.&#8221;<br \/>\nWhy not submitting proposals to the JCP first ?<\/p>\n<p>Many of the upcoming standards are mainly driven by IBM, Microsoft and BEA.<br \/>\nIn my opinion the benefit is, that it&#8217;s no more everyone against Microsoft but everyone for innovation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past the picture was clear.
